Biographical note
The medical working group was set up by the Department of Health and Social Security as part of the response to the Treatment and Rehabilitation Report of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (published 1982), and on the recommendation of a conference of representatives of a wide range of medical organisations, convened by the Secretary of State for Social Services in January 1983, to provide an early opportunity for the profession to consider its response to the Report.
The membership of the medical working group was drawn from nominations, invited by the DHSS from representative medical bodies, including the BMA, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the GMC, the General Medical Services Committee and the Association of Independent Doctors in Addiction. The group met from February to July 1984.
