Should it appear that I have in any degree succeeded in this task, I shall have gained my object, and the student will be assisted, not only in his bedside study of the disease, but also, I trust, in the prosecution of his more extended investigations into its nature and relations, as treated of in the numerous and valuable works which exist on the subject. In order to avoid prolixity I have omitted the details of some illustrative cases, and have transferred these, and several published observations which I have thought likely to be useful to the student, to an Appendix. I have also reserved for this an examination of some of the arguments on the controverted question of identity or non-identity of fever poisons. It gives me much pleasure to acknowledge my obligations to my friend Dr. Sinclair, for his supervision of this work when pass- ing through the press, and for many important corrections and emendations suggested by him. I am also indebted to his kindness for the valuable index appended to this volume.
