I would say that most mutations leave the enzymic properties unaltered. Thoday ; Is not Dr Kroeger's point in fact that you started by trying to avoid two specificities per polypeptide and you have got back to two specificities per polypeptide? Brenner: No. You have two specificities in a rather different way. Because, where in one case the specificities are for rather specific small molecules, the other two involve protein interaction which is a general class of reaction. I would like to say that I consider this kind of interaction between proteins much more easy to achieve in a specific way, than the interaction which can distinguish say CTP from UTP. Thoday: In fact you are so to speak escaping into two classes of specificity? Brenner: Yes.
