    vi Preface to the Second Edition few years. It has been necessary to completely rewrite the book because of the recent advances in our knowledge. Little of the old information has fallen away but much that is new has been added. Consequently, the new edition must be longer. The wealth of counseling experiences is now greater; over 2500 cases have been handled at the Dight Institute, the majority of them by the writer. In no case has there been any evidence of ill feeling toward the counselor, and the spontaneous gratitude of many of those who have been helped has been one of the finest experi¬ ences of my life. It is my hope that this book will give the physician a better background with which to answer the questions in human genetics which pop up at the most unexpected times. Medical genetics should not be approached as if it were a morbid subject full of threats to everyone but as a new science with hope for all. It was so much fun writing this book, even though for the second time, that some of the pleasure ought to rub off onto the reader. I hope it will! Sheldon C. Reed
