    recorded at the Council House, situated as it is, on the A. 120 east coast traffic route. This interesting factor, prompted the Health Committee to recommend the Council to approve the purchase of an additional volumetric smoke and sulphur dioxide recording apparatus, to be put into operation early in 1961 and to be sited in a part of the town where pollution from road vehicles would not arise. Table 1 shows the average figures in respect of smoke and sulphur dioxide pollution for the six worst sites, the six best sites and the average for the whole country (co-operating authorities only) for the year ending 31st March, 1958. The average figures for Bishop’s Stortford for the year ending 31st December, 1960, are also given to enable a comparison to be made. It will be noted from this table that the amount of sulphur dioxide pollution is satisfactorily low and compares favourably with the average for the best six sites. The amount of smoke pollution, whilst not excessive, does leave room for some small improvement when measured against the average for the six best sites. Table 2 gives the average, highest and lowest values for smoke and sulphur dioxide for each month of the year and also shows the respective averages for the full year.
