About this work

Description

According to his legend, Saint Anastasius was a weaver, fuller and dyer of cloth at Spalato in Dalmatia; hence this engraving printed on coloured silk. He was martyred by decapitation in 308. His severed head was transported to Rome, where it was believed to drive away the devil. He was the patron saint of cloth-workers and was invoked against headaches
