The greater width of the female pelvis accounts for the greater breadth of the female figure in this region, for not only are the iliac crests and their extremities, viz. the anterior superior iliac spines in front and the posterior superior iliac spines behind, more widely separated from their fellows of the opposite side than in the male, but the acetabular hollows for the reception of the heads of the thigh-bones are further apart, which gives increased breadth to the thighs below (Fig. 205).
