The subject of the painting, Henri IV of France, was born at Pau and converted from Protestantism to Rome, whereas the painter, Eugène Devéria, died at Pau having converted in the opposite direction, from Rome to the Protestant faith

After: a painting by Eugène Devéria, of which versions by the artist are in the Louvre, Paris (a huge painting, 4.84 x 3.92 m., signed and dated and presented by the artist in 1827) and in Angers Museum. Devéria retired to Pau after his conversion to Calvinism in 1843 (?), and died there. There was an exhibition at Musée national du Château de Pau, 17 December 2005 - 19 March 2006 on the painting and its supporting studies
