Description

A radio documentary following a group of patients (raised male) who are following a programme of treatment for gender dysphoria at the Charing Cross Hospital in London to become female. Ben is receiving treatment to become Bethany. John Randall is the pioneering psychologist who set up the Charing Cross Hospital where he/she is receiving treatment. Hormone treatment last about a year before surgery is offered. Emma has successfully transitioned; her mother reveals her relief as her 'son', now daughter, has gone through considerable psychological turmoil. Speech therapy is important for men transitioning to women. Matthew Mills is the speech therapist. Emma comments on the difficulties. Bethany was more successful with her treatment. Emma was a contestant on Mastermind (a BBC television quiz show) and experienced a backlash on Twitter questioning her gender. Tanya is looking to transition surgically. Phil Thomas is the surgeon in charge; demand is high. De Stewart Lorrimer comments on the normalisation of trans experiences' appearing in television programmes.
