Biographical note

Above the title, and in the same hand, is written 'Liber Comitissae Arundeliae'. This lady is Alathea [née Talbot], Countess of Arundel and Surrey [ -1654], wife of Thomas Howard, second Earl of Arundel [1586-1646]. Her portrait by Hollar, appears as a frontispiece to a book of receipts 'Nature embowelled: her choicest secrets digested into receipts ...'
