About this work
Description
Marlie Casseus is a 13-year-old girl from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, who has fibrous displasia, an enormous tumour weighing 7 kilos - the largest tumour of this kind ever recorded, on her face. It is so huge that it is closing her throat and crushing her wind pipe. If left it will surely kill her. The documentary follows her as she is air-lifted to Jackson memorial Centre, Miami, where top surgeon Jesus Gomez will operate on her. Detailed footage is shown of the 17-hour surgery which leaves Marlie with 2,500 stitches in her face, then a further shorter operation on the lower half of her face. Perhaps most fascinating is when, following more facial reconstruction, Marlie becomes able to speak again and describes what it was like living buried underneath such an enormous tumour.
