About this work

Description

On Lacy see further G.F. Russell Barker and A.H. Stenning, The record of Old Westminsters, vol. 2, London 1928, s.v.

Lacy's date of birth is inferred to be 1654 from both the age 38 given on this print (assuming it was made in 1692) and from the age given as 29 when he matriculated at Leiden in 1683. It is inconsistent with the age given as 16 when he matriculated at Oxford in 1673, which implies a birth date of 1657

Nathan Lacy, aged 38, full length to left. Left, sun irradiating book of Nature inscribed "NATVRA" with Latin inscription below meaning "O lover of truth and citizen of the world, come and explain to me this book". Right, a column on which is a coat of arms including a lion rampant surmounted by a ship; below it, a cadaver, supine, with intestines protruding from incision, and inscription meaning literally "Thus far for those givers [or "those seekers"] of advice". On the ground, chemical apparatus
