Biographical note

George Fraser’s association with Peter Froggatt began during his study of profound childhood deafness between 1959-1961. Froggatt, of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Queen's University, Belfast, accompanied him in the surveys of schools in Belfast and Dublin. In the mid 1960s Fraser worked extensively with Froggatt on the association between electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities and deafness. The work is described in 'The cardio-auditory syndrome of Jervell and Lange-Nielsen: the anatomy of a population study' by Froggatt in Fifty Years of Human Genetics: a festschrift and liber amicorum to celebrate the life and work of George Robert Fraser. The syndrome could cause sudden or 'cot' death in infants. Also in the Festschrift, N. D. Carter pays tribute to Fraser's contribution in this area (see PP/GRF/A.9).

Fraser and Froggatt produced a number of joint papers: 'Genetical aspects of the cardio-auditory syndrome of Jervell and Lange-Nielsen (congenital deafness and electrocardiographic abnormalities)', Fraser, Froggatt and T. Murphy, Annals of Human Genetics, Vol. 28 (1964); 'Congenital deafness associated with electrocardiographic abnormalities, fainting attacks and sudden death', Fraser, Froggatt and T.N. James, Quarterly Journal of Medicine, Vol. 33 (1964); 'Congenital cardiac arrhythmia', Fraser and Froggatt, The Lancet, 19 September 1964; 'Unexpected cot deaths', Fraser and Froggatt, Lancet, 2 July 1966; ‘The pathology of the ear in the cardio-auditory syndrome of Jervell and Lange-Nielsen (deafness with electrocardiographic abnormalities)’, Fraser, Froggatt and I. Friedmann, Journal of Laryngology and Otology, Vol. 80 (1966); 'Sudden death in infancy', Pediatrics, Vol. 40 (1967), Fraser and Froggatt; 'Pathology of the ear in the cardio-auditory syndrome of Jervell and Lange-Nielsen: report of a third case with an appendix on possible linkage with the Rh blood group locus', Fraser, Froggatt and I. Friedmann, Journal of Laryngology and Otology, Vol. 82 (1968).
