    of the year 1774, and another in the be- ginning of 1776, which evidently took their rife from a thaw, after long frofl, and were attended, like this, with pleuritic pains; but they differed from it, in being very inflammatory. In the cure of common difeafes, we are chiefly conducted by what has been ob- ferved to be ufeful or hurtful. But, in an uncommon difeafe, fuch as this, that ge- neral rule fails. We have ftill, however* fome guides left; an obfervation of the oc- caflonal caufes which excite it, of its fymp- toms, and of its fimilitude to fome other well known diflemper. We have obferved, that mild weather prevailed when it appear- ed ; that the fymptoms inclined more to the typhus than fynocha; that it went off with- out any remarkable evacuation ; and that it had a conflderable analogy to the preceding catarrhal fevers. Thefe conflderations ren- dered the expediency of great evacuations dubious. The firft queflion which naturally oc- curred was, Shall we bleed ? In moil attacks- on the bread:, attended with flitch, cough,, and difficult breathing, bleeding is proper. as
