    PKEFACE. In accordance with the wish expressed by some of those who did me the honour to be present at my Lettsomian Lectures, I have now published these Lectures in this small volume. I have availed myself of the opportunity thus afforded me to enlarge upon some of the topics that I was con- strained to notice briefly only in the Lectures as delivered. In the concluding Lecture, on the Treatment of Asthma, I have added some additional matter that seemed to me important and likely to prove useful to practitioners of medicine.
