About this work

Description

'From Kephissia to Chapel-en-le-Frith April 1941 to December 1943. The journal of Major S. T. Cowan, RAMC' edited by Tony Cowan. Received as word-processed text with inserted scanned images on CD-ROM, printed out 38pp. The editor's foreword indicates that this was in fact a postwar compilation rather than a strictly contemporary journal, probably based on Cowan's letters to his wife (since destroyed). The transcription has made a few minor editorial changes in paragraphing and punctuation, etc, and amalgamated the two version of the Greece and Crete sections. Scanned photographs and maps, which had been with the diary, have been inserted into the text. There is also a key to the abbrevations employed. A preamble describes Cowan's war service up to the opening of the journal with the evacuation of Greece, April 1941. He was employed as a Pathology Specialist The account covers the evacuation of Greece, a few weeks on Crete, evacuation from Crete on HM Hospital Ship Aba, and service at various locations in the Near East and North Africa
