About this work

Description

Addiction specialist John Marsden, whose father was an alcoholic, explores all aspects of alcohol. Professor David Nutt describes what alcohol does to the brain and why we like its effects so much. David Quain shows how alcohol is formed from a yeast organism in fruit. Are there different types of drinkers? Studies on monkeys have shown that there are behavioural traits shared by both humans and monkeys in their desire for alcohol and in the way it affects their behaviour. People are drinking at a younger age these days - 20 years ago the first alcoholic drink was around age 16, now it's age 13; Marsden assesses what damage early drinking might have on children as they grow up. Marsden has his liver tested and is advised to cut down but finds himself resisting that idea. He undergoes various further experiments to show how alcohol affects him, including a trial of a designer drug to replace the effects of alcohol.
