About this work

Description

Top, arms of King Ferdinand VI, portrait of King Ferdinand VI, and arms of the Conde de Aranda. Below the arms are dedications to the King and to the Conde de Aranda

Below the dedications are five tabernacles in monumental frames, containing engraved lettering which describes (left to right): the province of Guipúzcoa; the firearms and bayonets made in the factory; the governance of the factory, under the direction of the Conde de Aranda and the patronage of Saint Barbara; rifles and bayonets made for the infantry; and the building of the factory

Below the tabernacles is, in the centre, a circular topographical map of Soraluze-Placencia de las Armas and surrounding towns, accompanied on each side by a view of an office in the armaments factory. They are surmounted by a banderolle with engraved lettering: "Mapa topographica de la circunferencia de los lugares en Plasencia y los rea.s almacén.s de la fábrica". Below is a banderolle with engraved lettering: "La N. y L. villa de Placencia, en la M. N. y M. L. provincia de Guipúzcoa, sóla merece el laurel". The province of Guipúzcoa is described in abbreviations as "muy noble y muy leal" (very noble and very loyal)

The office on the left is a stock-room holding rifles and pistols down the left wall. Standing in the room are the "Contador" (Lamot himself), "Director" (the Conde de Aranda), and two "Examenadores" checking the guns. The office on the right is the packing room: three men are boxing up a consignment in a large wooden box ("Empaques"), supervised by two guards. Each office is surmounted by a banderolle explaining its function: the banderolles are held up by wild men with clubs

Below the bird's-eye view are four engravings of the four workshops of the factory, with engraved descriptions of them in the centre and in four panels below. The description in the centre is headed with a banderolle engraved "Esplicacion de los quatro gremios que compone la Real Fábrica". The individual workshops are also identified with banderolles as follows (left to right): "Gremio de Cañonistas" (gun barrel-makers: 180 workers); "Gremio de Caxeros" (finishers? 77 masters); "Gremio de Aparejeros" (assemblers: also 77 masters); and "Gremio de Llaberos" (fitters of the firing mechanism: 86 masters)

Bottom, a portrait of Florencio Joseph de Lamot in oval, with ledgers on shelves on the left and firearms with powder kegs on the right. In a banderolle above the portrait is engraved: "Estrella del más infeliz en fortuna y del más dichoso en desgracias." (Star of the most unhappy in good fortune and the happiest in misfortunes). Engraved around the oval frame to the portrait: "Soy siempre el constante florido; aunque en tan continuados contratiempos persegido" (I am always in a constant state of flourishing though persecuted in continuous setbacks). Below, along the bottom edge of the print, is his credit line: "D.

The margins are filled with engravings of weapons: "No existe hueco en que no reproduzcan fusiles y escopetas, carabinas, bayonetas, pistolas y picos, azadas y sables, etc., etc.
