    REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1938. The Committee has pleasure in presenting its Annual Repcrt and Statement of Accounts for the year ended December 31st, 1938. Resignation of Mr. J. L. Stretton. At the Annual Meeting of the Governors of the Hospital held on 15th March, 1938, Mr. J. L. Stretton’s resignation as the President of the Hospital, a position which he had held since 1924, was accepted with very great regret. Many tributes were paid to his work as President for 14 years, and also as a member of the Hon. Medical Staff for more than 55 years. Mr. W. Johnson was elected to succeed Mr. Stretton as the first President nominated from the Saturday Fund Committee. Appointment of House Governor. It was the opinion of the Committee that in view of the impending resignation of Mr. J. L. Stretton, that a House Governor should be appointed. Mr. F. W. Barnett was appointed House Governor and Secretary, and after doing good work, it is to be regretted that he is leaving the Hospital at the end of March to take up the appoint¬ ment of General Superintendent at the Oldham Royal Infirmary. Resignation of Mr. Cyril Chambers. Intimation was received from Mr. Cyril Chambers early in the year of his desire to relinquish his duties as Financial Secretary to the Hospital. The Committee wish to place on record their appreciaticn of the services rendered to the Hospital by Mr. Chambers and his family for so many years. As a token of their appreciation, a presentation was made to him on his retirement from this position. Work of the Year. The number of In-patients treated to a conclusion in 1938 was 2,145 as against 2,017 in 1937. The average daily number of beds occupied was 114.57 as against 111.54 in 1937. The average stay of patients being 19.44 days as against 20.18 in 1937. The total number of patients admitted in 1938 was 2,039 as against 2,025 in 1937.
