Hospitals were visited in London (St. Thomas's Hospital, St. George's Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital and the London Hospital), Manchester (the Manchester Hospital), Liverpool ( Liverpool General Hospital, Southern District Hospital), Birmingham (The Queen's Hospital and the Birmingham General Hospital) and Brussels with a view to including their better features in the extension of the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Infirmary. Construction, general arrangement, heating, ventilation and cleansing were the areas focused on.
