Collection of miscellaneous Italian letters and papers, mainly by medical and scientific figures, 1475-1902.

1. Letter from Ippolita Maria Sforza (1445-1488), duchess of Calabria, to her brother Galeazzo Maria Sforza, duke of Milan. Naples, 1 August 1475. Early 20th-century copy.

2. Examples of the handwriting of Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584), later archbishop of Milan and Cardinal, attested in 1716 by Guiseppe Antonio Sassi, prefect of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, and by J. C. Vanni, archbishop of Milan. 1553, 1555. 20th century facsimile.

3. Letter from Antonio Magliabechi (1633-1714), Italian bibliophile, to Carlo Roberto Dati (1619-1676), requesting the loan of two books from his library, and mentioning [Bartolomeo] Panciatichi. Florence, 3 December 1659.

A scrap of paper affixed to the letter bears the autograph of a 19th-century female correspondent identified in a contemporary hand as 'vedova di questo Duca Massimiliano', although it has not be possible to verify this claim.

15. Formal notification from ?Luigi Picho, presumably a physician, to 'eccelentissimo signor vice-presidente', attesting to the imbecility of one Francesco Appoloni. N.p., 29 June 1840.

16. Letter from Cesare Badiali (1805-1865), Italian opera singer, to Marietta Stück, on personal matters. N.p., 19 May 1841. Letter bears an embossed stamp with the word 'Bath' in capital letters, surmounted by a crown.

Acquisition note

The provenance of many of these documents is unknown: almost half bear no accession number (see under custodial history). Most of those that do were purchased at auction in London, at Stevens' in March 1931 (acc.68126) and Sotheby's in November 1933 (acc.67469), or from Gonelli in Florence in April 1933 (acc.66093). Three documents bear accession numbers that cannot be validated in the accession registers: 1 (acc.89396) 2 (acc.95813) and 23 (acc.69439).

Ownership note

Nos. 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17-18, 21-22 and 31, none of which bears a Wellcome accession number, all have numbers in red crayon at the top right corner, variously from 302 to 2178, suggesting referencing by a previous unknown owner.
