Acquisition note

These papers were received from Mr Ernsting by the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre in June 1999. A copy of his obituary from The Independent (9) was added in 2007

Biographical note

Mr Ernsting entered the Poor Law Service in 1929, and after experience in six institutions around the country, he and his wife became Master and Matron of Woodbine House Public Assistance Institution/Emergency Services Hospital, Pembroke 1939-1945, later moving to the Fishpool Institution, Bolton, Lancashire (a copy of Betty Connor, A Pauper's Palace: A History of Fishpool Institution (Bolton General Hospital) 1860-1948, 1989, presented by Mr Ernsting has been handed to the Library). All items except 1 are by Mr Ernsting.

Betty Connor, A Pauper's Palace: A History of Fishpool Institution (Bolton General Hospital), 1860-1948 (1989), to which some of the above material relates, was transferred to the Library. The archives of the Association of Health and Residential Care Officers (SA/AHR) also provides insight into similar health and welfare provisions.
