Description
Outlawed for murder of Henry Long in a family feud in Wiltshire, 1594. Served in army in France under Henri IV. Pardoned by Queen Elizabeth, 1598, army officer in Ireland; Governor of Guernsey 1621-1644. Held various offices of state under Charles I. Established what became Oxford Botanic Gardens from 1621 onwards
Portrait shows a wound outside the left eye covered by a patch: Danby received many wounds in the course of his military career, including a shot in the face in 1599 in battle near Mallow, County Cork
