    -i Perkins’s Patent Metallic Traders. THE REV. JAMES SHUTILEW()RTil, of Governg-HilU near SJdpion, Yorkjhire) Augujl 18 th, 1801, addreffed to B. D. Perkins, many important obfervations oil the Metallic Practice ; but the prefent limits allow of but the following extra<51. « The opportunity firft given nib of trying the merits of your 1 rattors, by my worthy friend, the Rev, Dr. Rippon, of Southwark, London, who lent me his let, lopn Ipread their fame in this neighbourhood ; for their effects in the cafes tried much exceeded our expectations. As foon as my Own let came to hand, many perfons afflicted applied to me ; hut no fooner were the fimple and contemptible-looking Tradtors exhibited to their view, than their confidence was turned to difgurt. This,-indeed, 1 find, has' been 'he (ituation of moft of my patients, which proves that if Imagination have any concern irr the Metallic \Pradlicc, it operates again ft it. But the TraTtorf, 1 find, as loon relieve the infidel, the fcornful and the contemner, as thofe who have a better opinion of them. ♦‘ The cures moil worthy of communicating, are, Three of Tooth-Ach, two of Chronic Head-Ach, two Burns, one fevere Scald, two violent Contusions* and many Cafes of Inflamed Eyes, 'a diforder very prevalent with us at this time.5’ [Mr. Shuttleworth next proceeds to detail federal Cafes, among which are two curea of very obftinate Sore Legs, of long handing, blit we have room only for the following, j “ Case I.—Severe Inflammation in an Eye.—A per {bn had for three years been .rmch afflicted with a rheum about one of her eyes, For ten days before fhe applied to Tie, the eye bad .been 1 o covered with a web, tliat fhe eould not Tee at all. Her Phyfician, who had tiled a yy*ifh* without any benefit, feared the fight was irrecoverably loft : fhe could neither deep nor - reft from the Violence of the pain and inflammation. 1 applied the Tradtors thirty minutes, during which fhe found great eafe, and food after was ena¬ bled to fee. I iifed them again only tvs-ice during the two following days', when the eye was well ; the pain and inflammation being gone, and the fight reftored.” “ Case II.—Afection of the Eye.—An infant child had an inflammation in the eye for two months. The ball was much funk, and of a d,ark purple color. A large white, fpeck then appeared, which covered half of the fight, and moft of the white of the eye.. The Phyficiah advifed to blifter the back of the neck, and then to take oft the fpeck' with the knife. The parents however prevailed on me firft to try the Trabt®r$, which I did, with but little hope. On the firft application, the watery difeharge ceafed much, and the eye was rendered more plump and bright. The fecund trial took oft the purple color. The third removed a red fibre, which Teemed to feed the fpeck ; and the fourth a and fifth applications, to my great ftirprize, removed the fpeck itfelf. It is impollible- . to tell, from the appearance, which of the eyes were affected.” THE REV. IIENHY GAUNTLETT, of Bothy, near'Southampton, October 7 th, 1801, to IT D. Perkins, writes : > “I have had repeated opportunities of trying your Tra£fdrs,, and of lending them among my neighbours ; and have no doubt of their having been ferviceabie. Perkins, the following ei Case,—Very objiinate Chronic Rhewnat fm.—A poor widow of the name of Perry, Seventy-two years of age, was for a long time afflicted with the Rheumatifm in the Hip, extending down the leg. Since March laft, fhe had been able to hobble about only by the affiftance of a ftaff; I lent her your Ti abhors, directing her daughter how to ufe them: after three applications, fhe was able to walk to town without her ftaff, and, to ufe her own expreflion, 1 had made her a thoufand pounds better.
