When offered for sale by Christie's, London, on 7 July 1922, lot 125, the painting was described as "Romney. Portrait of Dr Burrows, in green coat and vest, and white frills, 29 in. by 24½ in." It was accompanied at the sale by lot 126, "Romney. Portrait of Mrs Burrows, in white dress, with pink sash, 29 in. by 24½ in.". The use of the surname alone ("Romney") indicates the approximate style of the named artist, not an attribution to the named artist. An attribution to "Rigaud" has been suggested
