    retain sentiments of affection for her, will be fearful to lend her any countenance, lest they should themselves incur the suspicions of a censorious world. She already sees herself the object of malicious sneers or pretended pity; she sees the mingled expression of sorrow and reproof in the looks of her kin¬ dred on whom she has brought disgrace; she hears her parents, of whom she once consti¬ tuted the happiness and the pride, bewailing the miserable result of all their fond anxieties and labours, and wishing in the bitterness of their grief that she had never seen the light. Her mind reverts to the days of her inno¬ cence when she was a stranger to disquietude and remorse—when all the world seemed to smile upon her,—and the contrast with the present distracted state of her bosom, and the thick gloom which envelopes her future prospects, becomes too painful to be con¬ templated. The dreadful nature of this inter¬ nal conflict manifests itself in the fatal acts to which it too often drives the unhappy sufferer,
