    The Marrs McLean Department of Biochemistry Salih J. Wakil, Ph.D., Chairman The Marrs McLean Department of Biochemistry was established to promote a vital medical science concerned with the knowledge of chemical reactions in the living cell, and to provide students with sound scientific principles on which to base their clinical experience. The Department offers both formal instruction and research training in biological chemis try at Baylor College of Medicine. It contributes to education in the basic medical sciences by teaching comprehensive courses in biochemistry and genetics for first year medical students. In addition, it provides advanced courses and research opportunities to the medical students and fellows. In addition to its role in medical education, the department offers a research-oriented program lead ing to the Ph.D. degree in biochemistry. The scientific activities of the faculty cover a wide spectrum of basic biochemical research. The Marrs McLean Department of Biochemistry is led by Dr. Salih J. Wakil, who joined the Baylor faculty in 1971. In recent years Dr. Wakil has been awarded the American Chemical Society Award in Enzyme Chemistry, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Distinguished Duke Medical Alumnus Award. Dr. Wakil's laboratory has been the source of major contributions to our present understanding of the mechanism and regulation of fatty acid metabolism.
