    THE PRETENDED EARL OF WICKLOW WILLIAM, fourth Earl of Wicklow, died with- out male issue 5 his next brother, the Reverend Francis Howard, had died during the Earl’s lifetime after being married twice. By his first marriage he had three sons, all of whom died, but he had another son by his second wife who claimed the peerage on his uncle’s death. A rival to the estates however appeared in the person of William George Howard, an infant, who was stated to be the son of William George Howard, the eldest son of the Reverend Francis Howard, by his first marriage to a Miss Ellen Richardson. The birth of this child was disputed by the original claimant and the question was referred to the House of Lords. On investigation it transpired that William George, the reputed father of the child, was married to a Miss Richardson in February 1865, and four months after the marriage went to lodge with a Mrs. Bloor at 27 Burton Street, Eaton Square. They went away after three weeks and on returning to London at the end of the year, tried to procure their old apartments in Burton Street. The house was however full, but rooms were obtained for Mrs. Howard at No. 52 in the same street. Mr. Howard did not reside there himself, but used to meet his wife occasionally in a room at No. 27. A little later, Mrs. Howard wa§ able to return to No. 27 and again lodged at the Bloors’, occupying the entire upper portion of the house, the lower part being rented by one of her friends named Baudenave.
