About this work

Description

Medical commonplace book, with additions by other hands: in Latin and English; with an essay on Miracles by a later hand: in English. Material dates from c. 1640 to early 18th century. Some leaves have been cut out, and there are numerous blanks. The medical part of the MS. is mainly by two hands: that of Hewett, probably of about the middle of the 17th cent., consists of extracts from 16th and early 17th cent. medical authors. The other, in rounded upright script is alos in Latin, and one entry is dated 1661. There are a few added medical receipts in English, one of which is dated 1726. The work on Miracles contains many Greek and Latin quotations, biblical references, etc. It is written on various pages of the commonplace book which had been left blank. The script seems to be that of a very old man. The names 'Antho. Heuit' also 'Hewett' and 'Hewit' are inscribed on the verso of the last leaf. On the first leaf is a note probably by a book-binder 'Mr Huet in Murry leather & fillet'.
