About this work

Description

Bible. N.T. Acts 2.1-16, as foretold by John the Baptist in Matthew 3.11. The Virgin Mary sits in the centre, a common trope in iconographic tradition but without biblical foundation. A dove hovers above. Tongues of fire rain down; four of the apostles hold books. The Bible tells how the men appeared drunk to onlookers when they spoke in tongues
