About this work

Description

Roll I - Involuntary movements, part 1. The following titles and description is taken from the Institute of Neurology cinefilm catalogue. "Involuntary movements: A classification of involuntary movements is provided and examples of the following are shown: thyrotoxicosis, sensory ataxia, Sydenham's and Huntington's chorea, hemiballismus, torsion dystonia, myoclonus and tics (10 min.) / Involuntary movements (Athetosis, torsion dystonia, spasmodic torticollis): A series of sequences selected by Dr. David Marsden illustrate the features of athetosis, torsion dystonia and spasmodic toricollis. The cases of athetosis are variously due to pernicterus, anoxia at birth, and an anaesthetic mishap. The spasmodic torticollis and torsion dystonia are of unknown aetiology except in one of the latter which followed mumps at the age of 8 years (12 min.) / Involuntary movements: Four patients are shown the first being a woman of 46 years with unilateral hemiballistic movements since an infantile hemiplegia at the age of 3 years. This is followed by a girl of 20 years with severe choreoathetosis following perinatal anoxia. The last two patients are first a girl with unusual myoclonus and finally a boy with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (6 min.)"

The Institute of Neurology Cinefilm Library comprises 97 short, silent, monochrome and colour studies of individual case-histories from the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases selected and compiled by Professor John Marshall, former Professor of Clinical Neurology in the University of London, providing an invaluable visual record of the clinical features of nervous disease. The original films existed as a collection of unedited 16mm films until January 1989 when the Wellcome Trust had the films cleaned, re-edited and copied onto video. The videocopied Cinefilm Library includes 94 of the 97 original films, grouped according to their clinical subject matter into 14 rolls, varying from 20 - 80 minutes in length. Each roll includes one or two major clinical subject-grouping, each of the videotapes features one roll.
