I tried in vaini every means to find a contractor for it, and was at last obliged to- make my agreement with the master tailor of the regiment itself from whose colonel it was withdrawn. And here I s’lrely mayv be permitted to say how much it perverted the line I had takein in the execution of my duties, and justifies me finally in stating it in a very different point of view to that in which I at first saw ib and then expressed myself. As to Mr. Gardiner’s saying,, Why did. I not charge the purchase of the mere materials only to Goverai ment? I have before stated. Because he had made himself a party; in it; for I declared to Mr. Chaniac in my chamber, that otherwisb I would gladly have resigned it to the colonel. Mr. Gardiner haa then made himself the sleeping partner in it, though now he awake* with a declaration so little like what he would have thought of i: at the time. As to Mr. Gardiner’s transmitting the charge for tha second sum of money lost into the water by the very same officen which he does not disown, T never thought Mr. Gardiner h^ am interest in it; yet he well knew, by my resistanee to the first, should refer it back again to Pyrmont, and therefore it was butt secontl source of discord he furnished between the colonel am myself. It was a point which no regimental Inspector in hJ senses would have taken upon himself to admit.$
