About this work

Description

A mother and child sit at the top of a flight of steps, eating, next to an archway with a London Transport sign labelled 'Gin Lane'. Behind them is the cityscape of central London, with a pawn brokers and pub in the foreground, and office buildings, construction cranes and the Shard in the background. Commuters and Londoners go about their business.

Gin Lane 2016 is a reimagining of William Hogarth's 1751 cartoon 'Gin Lane'. The London street setting of Hogarth's picture has been modernised, with the Shard in the background, but still centres on a mother and child. The scene reflects public health challenges facing British society in the 21st century. The artist's interpretation notes can be seen on the RSPH website: https://www.rsph.org.uk/about-us/news/gin-lane-2016-iconic-artwork-reimagined-for-the-21st-century.html
