About this work

Description

In reverse to a version published in Henry Southwell, New book of martyrs: here the saint is on the left and the pagans are on the right. The border is very similar to one used by the publisher G. Kearsley in prints of F. de Fénelon, The adventures of Telemachus, the son of Ulysses (not the London 1795 edition)

Marcus was bishop of Arethusa, a Roman city in Syria later occupied by the city of Ar-Rastan. He is sitting in a wicker basket, suspended from a frame, with his hands tied to his back and rubbed in honey left to be stung to death by wasps
