About this work

Description

Correspondence and memoranda, dating chiefly from 1963. Covers Smithells' exchanges with other regional schemes for collecting and analysing congenital malformations, and with the Ministry of Health concerning its plans for a compulsory nation-wide scheme that would supersede regional registries. Includes an original punch card of the Liverpool Registry of Congenital Abnormalities and sample record cards from other regional registration schemes.

The Liverpool Registry had been recording all malformations in live and stillborn babies born in the City of Liverpool and the adjoining County Borough of Bootle since January 1960. In 1985 it celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The material appears to have been organised several times over. At one stage its components received numbered labels running 0033-0068 and 0814-0817. A subsequent inventory by the Thalidomide Trust used a different system (CM001-CM028; copy at the start of the file).

Intercalated sheets bearing the logo of RWM Data Management Ltd and a September 2006 date indicate that the material may have been digitised around that time.
