    INTBODUCTION. How to commence the. study of medicine is a problem which presents considerable difficulties to parents, guardians, and the earnest youths who have an inclination to devote themselves to the healing art. • The want of an introductory manual which should treat of. the preliminary education of the student, and indicate how, even under the most unfavourable circumstances, he can advance himself before he begins to walk the hospitals, has long been felt, although the addresses delivered at the opening of the winter sessions of the medical schools contain frequent allusions to such topics. Practically the advice then comes too late. The writer has attempted to meet this want, and to supply to the parent, guardian, and student, the information which they require, and which cannot be given within the com- pass of a letter in answer to their enquiries.
