About this work

Description

Apparently an interpretation or reconstruction of a statue of the crouching Venus. According to the lettering, this statue was in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome: a courtyard there contained many famous sculptures. It may be the one referred to by Haskell and Penny (p. 323) as being in Naples and having been drawn by Maerten van Heemskerck.
