Secretaries policies towards keeping correspondence varied, and the general files listed below are put together from letters kept in the meetings files, other files and loose material. D/1/1 contains all the surviving correspondence around the setting and early years of the Society. The remaining files have been weeded of ephemera, leaving in the general files mainly debates among the committee members regarding the constitution and rules, correspondence about admission to membership, including invitations to honorary membership, and replies to requests for information and advice.
