    occasioned by compression of the arteries of the neck (we already knew that smaller losses of from two to three draclims were of no importance), we performed the three following experiments : ETperiment i.—A white, female, well-fed rabbit, ten weeks old, and weighing one pound nine ounces and a quarter. The left subclavian artery is tied, the innominate artery compressed. Violent convulsions take place. The right carotid is then tied and divided above the ligature. The blood fii-st spouts forth and after- wards di-ops out. In the coui-se of half an hour five drachms of blood are gradually withdrawn. The animal is put in an upright position. Is in a very weak state; the belly tolerably sunk inj the pupils very dilated; the fundus of the eye, however, of a red colour, and the animal still able to sit upright. Ten minutes later, forty minutes after the commencement of venesection, the innominate artery is compressed. The animal leaps forward with great force, and falls into violent convulsions. Upon loosening the compressorium, consciousness returns, but slowly. Ten minutes later, the attempt to abstract some blood from the animal is renewed, whereby the left carotid is lacerated below the place where the ligature is apphed, and the annual dies from haemorrhage, terribly convulsed. As the animal was tied by its fore legs, we were able to collect all the blood which issued forth. Only a few drops were found in the left heart. The total amount of blood lost by the animal in all the hemorrhages was seven drachms and a half. The last attack came on when the animal had altogether lost six. In spite, therefore, of a gradual, copious, and debilitating loss of blood taking place within half an hour, ten minutes afterwards by compressing the arteries of the head, and twenty minutes after- wards by haemorrhage, the most violent convulsions were produced, fuUy equal to those wliich had preceded. Experiment 3.—A white, female, well-fed rabbit, about ten weeks old, weighing one poimd seven ounces and three quarters; tempera- ture of the rectum 39° C, temperature of the room 15° C.
