About this work
Description
Mary Goldring considers the future of Britain's pharmaceutical industry. She perceives an opportunistic industry which lives by expensive research - most of which produces nothing - in pursuit of the occasional, huge profit. GPs are now required to cut down on their drug expenditure; how will this affect the industry? The increasing licensing of drugs for over-the- counter sales continues the drug's profit-life, but encourages self-medication, which may be detrimental to the patient. Development of drugs for the Third World will suffer as pharmaceutical companies cut down on research. Ms Goldring sees an industry with an image problem, as both the public and, increasingly, the medical profession, are alienated by its pursuit of high profits.
