    ( 8 ) As Medicine Cherts are made of different iizes, each perfon may adopt which they pleafe: the firft, nine, or twelve, I particularly recom¬ mend to every family, Thofe who keep the whole will have a very good Apothecary’s fhop; and a Phyfician or Apothecary may make a good Medicine up quickly, to fuit any exigency, I have opiitted the Bark, and feveral other valu¬ able Medicines, becaufe there is time fufficient to procure them, when wanted; and, hrft, for Colds and Coughs, is , ' ELIXIR PAREGORIC This excellent Elixir was invented by Le Morf, a French Surgeon, and was called the Elixir Afthmatic* It is a Medicine of great efficacy N. B. Perfons who are fubjedl to a bad Qough, of long ^landing, and Shortnefs of Breath, muft take care not to meddle with it, an account of the Opium in it, which would almbft choak them, When a perfon has got a Cold, they Should put on a double night-cap, and a woollen ftock- jng round their neck. Children are frequently troubled with a Cough that proceeds from eating tralh, which occa- fions tough phlegm to be lodged in the ftomach: in that cafe, or where it is a Whooping-Cough, a gentle vomit of Ipecacoanha wine, (dofe, two drams, in any pleafant liquor, for a child of fix years old) may be given; or a gentle purge; as, Take manna, half an ounce; diflblve it in a cup of tea ; and add Tin£lure of Jalap, one tea-fpoonful: but, where Worms are fufpe£led, a dofe of Bafilicon Powder/ muft be given. * ObfervCj in taking of Medicines, to begin with a fmall dofe, and fo increafe or diminifh as you find them operate; by this ^ou will difeover what is commonly called the Con- ftitution. In Fevers this fhould be given very fparingly,. as it will rather increafe the heat, in /
