About this work

Description

Investigates the risk of contracting mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining), for workers (or inhabitants) in buildings containing blue asbestos. This substance was widely used by the British construction industry in the 1950s and '60s. Throughout South East England, thousands of homes contain blue asbestos and it is also found in schools. Mesothelioma was once thought to be totally occupationally related, but cases are coming to light in the users or inhabitants of buildings containing blue asbestos. Only a minority of London boroughs have a policy of action when asbestos is discovered in their schools, largely because of financial constraints.
