About this work

Description

Left, a river god. Right, winged putti watch from behind trees. The picture seems to combine more than one episode in the story. The crystal jar which is shown by the river's edge in the foreground is the one which, in Apuleius, Metamorphoses (The golden ass) VI.13, Psyche is required to use to gather water from the spring which feeds the rivers Styx and Cocytus. In V.13 Cupid comforts the weeping Psyche.
