Suffolk, by whom he had a son, Charles; and 2ndly, 6 March, 1786, Anne, eldest dau. of Sir Charles Gascoigne, Knt., by whom (who to. 2ndly, James Dalrymple, Esq.) he had an only dau., who d. in infancy. The earl d. 19 May, 1794, and was s. by his son, Charles, 8th earl; b. 5 July, 1753; to. 30 April, 1779, Sophia, dau. of John, Earl of Hopetoun, by whom (vdio d. 8 March, 1813) he left at his decease, 17 March, 1828, an only son, Thomas, present earl. Haggerston, Sir Thomas, of Haggerston Castle, co.North- umberland; b. 13 July, 1785 ; s. his uncle as 6th hart., 3 Dec. 1831; m. 24 Jan. 1815, Mar¬ garet, only dau. of William Robertson, Esq. of Lady kirk, CO. Berwick, by whom (who d, 26 Oct. 1823) he has issue, Marianne-Sarah, to. 10 Sept. 1834, to David Majoribanks, Esq., and that gentleman assumed, in consequence, the surname of Robertson, {see Burke’s Landed Gentry.) Of this ancient family we find William and Richard Haggerston witnesses to a donation, in 1190; John de Hag¬ gerston, one of the Scottish barons who swore fealty to King Edward, in 1296; Robert de Haggerston, a witness to a donation to the Abbey of Cultre, in 1468; and Thomas Haggerston, Knt., travelling tutor, or governor, to Prince Alexander Stuart, son of King James IV. I. Thomas Haggerston, Esq., of Haggerston Castle, commanding-officer of a regiment in the service of King Charles I., was created a Baronet 15 Aug. l643. Sir Thomas to. Alice, dau. and heir of Henry Banaster, Esq. of Bank, co. Lancaster, by whom he had three sons and four daus., Ellen, TO. to Sir William Selby, Knt. of Biddleston. Anne, to. to V illiam Blundell, Esq. of Crosby. Margaret, to. to William Hodson, Esq. of Hepburn. Alice, who d. unm. The second and only surviving son, II. Sir Thomas, to. 1st, Margaret, dau. of Sir Francis Howard, Knt. of Corby Castle, by wffiora he had nine sons and a dau. ; and 2ndly, Jane, dau. and heir of Sir William Carnaby, but had no issue. Sir Thomas’s eldest son, Thomas, fell in the service of King James II. in Ireland , the 3rd, 4th, and 5th sons took orders in the church of Rome, (the family still adheres to the catholic religion;) while the 2nd son, William, to. Anne, dau. of Sir Philip Constable, Bart., and dying before his father, left, beside three daus., of whom the third, Anne, to. Bryan Salvin, Esq. of Croxdalc, a son.
