    to prevent the fluid not only from palling through it, but alfo by preffing upon the neighbouring lymphatics from palling through them alfo; that the arm fwells, and for a time remains in almoft intolerable pain until the fwollen gland fubfides, or until the fluid finds a paffage by other more indirect courfes-* If it be objected that the fanguiferous fyftem is here alfo obftruCted from the fame caufe, and that thence alone may arife the painful dilienfion of the limb, I would anfwer, that where lymphatic glands have been cut out by the knife, as mull be the cafe when in the removal of a cancerous breaft they have been found to be difeafed from the abforbed fames, that then where there is no tumor, but a confiderable vacuity from an aCiual lofs of fubltance, an interruption takes place from the deftruction of the ufual paffages, tumefaction is produced, and pain equally excruciating follows. When a difeafed gland is extirpated from the groin, as now and then has been pradtifed in fome fyphilitic cafes, the leg and thigh will, long afterwards continue in a painfully tumefied ftate, until 3 the $
