About this work

Description

"The figure selected by the artist for this subject, is from that more common class in our time, the Jew-Pedlar, whose history might be found at Gosport, Deal, and Wapping, or most sea-port towns, with many a comical tale of his adventures with sailors and their lasses, but not to be recorded by those whose motto is, 'Let us be merry and wise.'"--Shoberl, op. cit. p. 234
