    THE THIRTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICERS,SUPERINTENDENT, To the Committee of Visitors of the Worcester County and City Lunatic Asylum. Mr. Chairman, My Lord, and Gentlemen, I have the honour to lay before you my Report on the condition and management of your Asylum for the year 1890. With the Report I present various statistical and medical tables, for assistance in the preparation of which I am indebted to the Assistant Medical Officers. Appended is also the financial statement of the general accounts which has, as usual, been prepared by the Asylum Clerk, a table of the dietary, and some information as to the manner in which the patients have been employed. The changes that occurred amongst the patients were as follows : — Total number of Patients remaining in the Asylum Males. Females. Total. 1st January, 1890 ... 407 490 897 Admitted 99 102 201 Discharged 59 55 114 Died 45 27 72 Remaining in the Asylum 31st December, 1890 402 510 912 The daily average number resident during the year was 908. Of the patients remaining in the Asylum on the 81st December, 1890, 41 males and 50 females were possibly curable cases. Although the above table shows the number of admissions, discharges and deaths it does not fully indicate the number of patients belonging to your County and City for whom accommodation was required at the end of the year, as, in addition to those stated to be remaining in the Asylum on the 31st December, 29 patients were, owing to lack of room here, under treatment at Derby Borough Asylum. There has thus been again, for the fourth year in succession, a very large addition to the number of patients remaining under treatment, the increase during the past year amounting to no less than 44.
