Description

Medical notebook of Thomas Hughes MD, c.1850. It includes notes from lectures, cases and from other doctors as well as some articles from newspapers about various treatments and diseases.

Conditions discussed include neuralgia, paralysis, cholera (including cuttings pasted in), spermatorrhea, dysentery, paraplegia and stricture of the urethra.

Where material is dated it tends to fall in the 1850s.

There are also three loose ink and watercolour drawings of country scenes at the back of the book, artist and subject not identified.

Biographical note

The date of the notebook suggests that the author is the Thomas Hughes who passed LM (Glasgow) in 1852, MRCS (Eng) in 1856, LSA in 1857 and MD (St. Andrews) in 1862, before practicing in North Wales.

Ownership note

Previously sold at auction by Mullock Madeley, Ludlow, 15 April 2004.
