Description

Black and white reproduction of a portrait of William Marsden (1796-1867), English surgeon, with the following lettering underneath: "William Marsden, M.D., Surgeon. Founder of the Royal Free Hospital, 1828. This portrait painted by T. H. Illidge, Esq. was presented to the hospital by one hundred and eight govenors, 1850." The reproduction was taken from the original oil painting at the Royal Free Hospital, London and is not held by Wellcome Collection. The film negatives were taken by Mr Fletcher on 30/12/1966, as replacements for the original glass plate negative from February 1931.
