About this work

Description

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL): skin lesion This is a medium power view of the ulcerating lesion seen in image W0044363. The image shows an area of tissue outside the granuloma, at the interface between the lymphoid infiltrate (L) and peripheral macrophages (M). The macrophages have a granular appearance because they contain Leishmania sp. amastigotes. Amastigotes were not seen within the macrophages in the central necrotic tissue. H&E stain. A granuloma is a localized inflammatory response. Infected macrophages within the granuloma are eliminated by an effective immune response.
